(Disclaimer: Some of these sites sell pornography we could not support as we do not wish to support any exploitative sexual practice.)

The sad news for all smokers: They have half as much sex as non-smokers, and enjoy it far less!

And: Sex - drugs and alcohol just don't rock and roll, and certainly alcohol and drugs do not make for good sex!! The effects of drugs on sex are invariably negative.

Safer Sex  Be safe....for your health's sake, always practice safe sex, use a condom in new relationships and whenever you are not absolutely certain of your partners sexual history.

Alcohol

The most common mind altering substance... other than caffeine!

After the first drink which may create a relaxed inviting ambiance all further drinks cause problems, with both the skill of the lover and their responsiveness which is reduced because of the alcohol!

Long term problems are severe with excessive alcohol intake being one of the more important physical causes of impotence. (Brewers droop)

Amphetamines

Cocaine

Hallucinogens

Opiates

Tobacco

(Nb: Marijuana increases desire but does not alter responsiveness)

If you want a good reason for not using these mainly illicit drugs then note:

All  of these reduce your sexual responsiveness!!

It is more difficult to be aroused and to have an orgasm!! It is more difficult to be in touch with your partners experiences

Say yes to sex!! and No to drugs!! Should be the governments anti-drugs campaign!!

Anti depressants:

Our view of depression is that it is best treated as a psychological problem. The underlying problems need addressing, as well as the current symptoms.

Frequently cause a reduction in both the sex drive and responsiveness.

If you want to enjoy good sex we recommend finding an alternative to antidepressants. As usual don't come off medication without medical support!!

As psychotherapists, we believe the best treatment for depression is multi-faceted, and includes psychotherapy, physical activity and when possible a good loving sex life!! this in itself helps to overcome the depression, it is difficult to be depressed and at the same time to  have good sex and an orgasm!

The contraceptive pill

This is a difficult one!!

Two effects contradict each other.

Firstly the pill is very liberating, taking fear out of sex, wonderful pleasurable and satisfying sex can then follow.

Secondly, for some women the pill reduces their sex drive significantly so an alternative to the pill is recommended, as this negates the freedom the have on the pill.
